“If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15
When I use to look at this scripture I would think that through my actions I will show God that I love Him.
But the more I look at this scripture I wonder could it mean that through my LOVE for Him my obedience will come?
Often we say we LOVE God, and I have no doubt that when someone professes their LOVE for God, they are truly being sincere. However, our LOVE can be flawed at times. Simply believing or LOVING Jesus, isn’t enough. We are actually commanded by Jesus to LOVE Him with all our heart, soul, and mind (this is the greatest commandment.)
So even though we may LOVE God, do we LOVE Him more than Money? Our sexual desires? Food? Companionship? Shoes? Time? Our Spouse? Our children? Our friends?
When we LOVE something more than God then that something has become an idol in our life, and Jesus is not the LOVE of our life. In order to delight in the Lord we need to set aside the “things” we LOVE more than Him. It’s certainly not an easy thing to do, and it may seem that one person’s sacrifice is greater than another’s, but the truth is we all have our idols and no matter what that idol is, it’s difficult to let it go.
I think it’s pretty simple to know what is in the way of us LOVING God with all our heart, mind, and soul – it’s simply whatever we LOVE more than Him…we are called to LOVE Him MORE! We are called to Delight in Him!

Good reminder. Thank you. God Bless
Very good reminder. I needed that right about now.
“Through my LOVE for Him my obedience will come” I like that. Good reminder of how idols can interfere with that love.
Definitely…I think we often forget about the “obedience” aspect of our faith. Even though, as parents, much of what we do is about helping our children attached “Love/Obedience” as one.
ooooooh – right on Heather. Yeowch! Sometimes it’s easy to think that my love for Him is enough – as if the emotion I feel toward Him is adequate. How empty & meaningless it is if I just confess Him with my mouth… Great post!
You know hubby and I were talking about this subject, and he made a very good point about sometimes we need to CHOOSE God…it made me think about how LOVE is a CHOICE. CHOOSE Jesus = LOVE Jesus.
Thank you! Amazing! That makes me want to love God more and more. Such a great gift and commandment, to love a wonderful mighty God! I am blessed!
